10 Things We Look For:
- Upper body posture and balance
- Arm swing
- Knee bend on driving leg
- Lower leg ankle return below the knee
- Stride length and ankle extension
- Return leg to the centre line of gravity
- Skate edge on return and drive
- Angle of drive leg from centre line
- Head and shoulders position
- Toe in front of knee on landing
Common Mistakes:
- Lean to far forward, not balanced over feet, weight too far forward.
- Arms swing too high or wide which results in a loss of energy and stability
- A shallow knee bend causing skater to be too upright and off balance
- Ankle return is too high and slows the time on the return leg
- Short stride and choppy slapping down of the foot
- The skate is returned too wide outside of the hips and not under the hip
- Skate blade landing on the outside edge, resulting in a loss of energy
- Legs pushing back too far directly behind body and ankle leaving ground too early.
- Looking down causing the shoulders to round; body will lean forward as a result
- Knees in front of the toes on landing which inhibits blade to land flat, causing a loss in speed and efficiency
SKATING ABILITY IS THE KEY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN AVERAGE PLAYER & AN EXCEPTIONAL PLAYER
